Family Grub-dog (assumed)

The Blue Bulborb is a grub-dog that, considering the existence of the Dwarf Blue Bulborb, appeared in Pikmin 2 during its development. It would have strongly resembled the Red Bulborb, although with a blue backside. The exact behaviors of the Blue Bulborb are unknown but presumably would have been identical to those of the Orange Bulborb, which it later became.

The Lapis Bulborb is a grub-dog appearing in Pikmin 2: New Year as a close relative of the Red Bulborb. Lapis Bulborbs are often found asleep but can be woken up them being touched or harmed. Whilst awake, a Lapis Bulborb will chase after Pikmin and leaders until they exit its territory. When without prey to chase after, it will navigate back to its original sleeping position, promptly yawning and sitting down before returning to its slumber. Its dwarf counterpart is the Dwarf Lapis Bulborb.

Lapis Bulborbs bear a strong resemblance to Red Bulborbs, although their rump is blue instead of crimson. They have a tapered snout, cream-colored skin, and a blue backside featuring white spots. Mounted on a pair of eyestalks on their face are bulging eyes that have white sclerae and blue pupils. Below their body is a pair of slender legs, and at the end of each of their four front-facing toes is a claw.

Two common strategies employed to defeat a Lapis Bulborb are either swarming the creature's backside with a large quantity of Pikmin or rapidly throwing Pikmin on top of it. Although both strategies can be used together and are easily executed whilst the Lapis Bulborb is asleep, they can be carried out while it is awake. However, Pikmin casualties are likely to occur during that time unless ultra-bitter spray is used or the creature is either fled from or outmaneuvered. Be sure to whistle Pikmin off and away from the Lapis Bulborb before it can shake them off, and repeat the cycle until it is dead.

In Pikmin 3.9, the Blue Bulborb is a semiaquatic grub-dog that looks like a Red Bulborb with a blue backside with white spots and a blue, axolotl-like tail. It walks around in search of prey either in or out of water, and while submerged it occasionally swims up to take a breath. Swarm its tail to prevent it from swimming away and to secure an easy kill.

The Blue Bulborb is a subspecies of grub-dog appearing in Pikmin Eco as a close relative to the Red Bulborb. It looks very similar to the Red Bulborb, except that it is blue in color instead of red, and always spawns in submerged areas. While having slightly more health, it's also slower than the Red Bulborb.

Notes

In-game entry

This subspecies of grub-dog has developed a semi-aquatic lifestyle due to its habitat so close to the sea. Although it has the same physical anatomy as similar bulborb species, the blue bulborb has evolved a set of primitive gills located just inside the throat, which allows it to breathe both in the air and in the water. There's been some debate whether it is a bulborb that has evolved to suit an aquatic lifestyle, or if the species is a missing link between terrestrial bulborbs, and aquatic water dumples. Further research is being conducted on the matter.

The Blue Bulborb is a grub-dog appearing in Pikmin I. It is stronger than normal Red Bulborbs and lives in water, where it will leave only its eyes out of the surface in case any Pikmin come by. It is very ferocious and can eat up to eight Pikmin in a single bite. Sometimes, it may get infected by Parasitic Pikmin, creating a Blue Bulbmin. It is most closely related to grub-dogs such as Bulbears and fellow Bulborbs.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This member of the grub-dog family lives in humid areas, but it lives in hot climates too, making the species more common. It occasionally sets up traps for unsuspecting Pikmin to be trapped in, which will then awaken the Blue Bulborb, ready for a feast. It prefers living on the surface for humidity and temperature reasons.

Louie's notes

Mix this creature's meaty flanks and upper back in cream, and stir for 2 minutes. Put in a pan full of boiling water and let cook for 2 minutes. Serve immediately for a savory dessert.

The Blue Bulborb is a relative of the Red Bulborb in Pikmin: Redemption that resides in water. It has blue skin, white spots, webbed feet, and gills.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The blue bulborb appears to be a cousin of the red bulborb that is beginning to adapt to underwater regions. The feet have become webbed with a thin membrane and gills have started to grow over the nasal cavity. The dwarf blue bulborb is becoming extinct because of its inability to adapt to these aquatic environments. Little else is known about this creature.

Louie's notes

Attacks Eats Pikmin

The Blue Bulborb appears in Pikmin: Wide World as a semiaquatic grub-dog that exclusively inhabits Balmy Highlands, as well as its caves, because of the area's clear, clean water. Its dwarf counterpart, the Dwarf Blue Bulborb, is frequently found nearby. Blue Bulborbs can be host to parasitic Pikmin, causing the existence of Blue Bulbmin. Blue Bulborbs typically sleep in a variety of positions in water that goes up to their eyestalks while their dwarf counterpart hunts in more shallow water. A Blue Bulborb will awaken if it is touched, injured, or hears a sound loud enough to rouse it from its sleep. While it is awake, a Blue Bulborb will pursue any Pikmin and leaders in its sight, even traveling into deeper water to catch them, until they leave its territory. This will prompt the creature to find a spot near the center of its territory to lay down and return to its slumber. The Green Bulbot is similar to the Blue Bulborb, but is mechanical and resides within acid instead.

Blue Bulborbs are the same size and shape as most other bulborbs but have a distinct appearance. They have tan skin, a blue backside with white spots, light green eyes with white sclerae, a set of gills on either cheek, and webbed feet. In its reddish mouth is a pink tongue.

Defeating a Blue Bulborb can be tricky, as they are always found sleeping in a body of water. Although they can be attacked most easily by charging Blue Pikmin at its backside, swarming a sleeping Blue Bulborb with Winged Pikmin is also a viable strategy as they can fly over bodies of water. Caution must be exercised, however, to not allow Winged Pikmin to be thrown into the water when the creature shakes them off. A Blue Bulborb can also be led out of the water so that it may be attacked by land-faring Pikmin, although this can be dangerous because the creature will be prepared to eat its prey. As with many grub-dogs, throwing Pikmin onto the creature's eyes will cause it to flinch, buying precious time to defeat it with little to no casualties, as well as inflicting damage and making it release any Pikmin currently in its mouth. Any leaders that end up in the creature's mouth will be chewed up, and then spat out alongside any Pikmin in its mouth at the time. From a distance, a Blue Bulborb can attack by spewing a stream of water from its mouth, but only if it can drink some from any it is standing in beforehand. Upon defeat, a Blue Bulborb will fall to the ground.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, Blue Bulborbs will occasionally feign sleeping, lying in place with their eyes closed to give the impression that they are asleep. It will periodically open its eyes to look around for a brief moment, and then promptly close them again. If not approached by Pikmin or leaders for it to surprise attack, either directly or by spraying those unaware with water, it will eventually fall asleep again and repeat the cycle.

Notes

  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #1 (all difficulties): The Blue Bulborb prefers to stay in water, so it can be tricky to attack unless lured out.
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #2 (all difficulties): At a distance, the Blue Bulborb can spew water at Pikmin. Keep a watchful eye on them!
  • PWW Data file icon.png Data file #3 (ultra-spicy difficulty only): Blue Bulborbs like to feign sleeping to spray water at unaware Pikmin and leaders. Pay attention!

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png This species of grub-dog seems to have adapted to a semiaquatic lifestyle that allows it to survive on land and in water. The blue bulborb prefers to inhabit bodies of water that cover its gills while it lays down to sleep. Although its feet are webbed, it still can not properly swim, only so much as trudge in the water in which it lives.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png Their vibrant blue polka-dotted waterproof hides would make for popular designer umbrellas, or maybe even raincoats! Too bad Hocotate doesn't really get rain...

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png Blue bulborbs become quite irritable if they don't have a body of water to wade around in. I recommend that their owners purchase a pool if they don't already have one, or live by a water body of some sort. Blue bulborbs love to splash those they love!

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png This beast's meat is as fishy as its aquatic relatives', meaning it can be used as a suitable substitute in dishes requiring it. It's just fine on its own, though.

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png Blue bulborbs prefer to sleep with their eyes above the water's surface. This is so they can peer at potential prey strolling along the shoreline, which is a pretty sneaky tactic! Unfortunately, they tend to sleep more than they watch...

This particular grub-dog has probably somehow been mutated. As it walks, it creates a trail of water, and it sleeps in a puddle. The puddle is created as a disguise for the blue bulborb and is effective in water, but on land its location is obvious.

In Pikspore, Blue Bulborbs resemble Red Bulborbs with blue backs and have slightly more health. They appear in colder regions.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Yet another grub-dog subspecies, the blue bulborb has a slightly thicker skin, preventing major damage from smaller creatures. Unlike the hairy bulborb, which gets its warmth from the thick fur that covers its back, the blue bulborb uses a retractable sail like an air conditioner, warming its body when it is cold, and vice versa. Studies indicate it is one of the oldest bulborb species, dating back to prehistoric times.
