The Blinking Bonecrusher is a species of eyebulb in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The eyebulb is one of the most unnerving bosses in the game, similar to the Demon’s Claw or Venowraith. The creature has the skull of a cow, which has a large nose ring in its nostril. Two large golden rings are hung on each horn. Most unnervingly, two human-like eyeballs inhabit the sockets of the cow skull. A large, human spine extends downwards from the skull, floating alongside the it. There are no arm bones, but two large, human skeleton hands with extremely sharp finger bones float in front of the boss. The boss is surrounded in a barely noticeable, gray mist.
The Blinking Bonecrusher can be found completely idle, resembling just a large cow skull at first. But when approached, it will begin to shake violently. The eyeballs will suddenly pop inside the skull, and the entire skeletal structure of the beast will erupt upwards and form together; initiating the boss fight. The Blinking Bonecrusher has a few attacks at its disposal. Its main attack is slamming its large hand into the ground to crush Pikmin. It will slam one hand into the ground, and both hands when it’s low on health. Another attack is the Blinking Bonecrusher breathing a massive flame of fire, which can ignite Pikmin caught by the flames. The boss will even spit out pools of lava when on low health. Its third attack is firing rays of light from its fingertips. The rays of light will dig through the ground in a straight line, but will follow more complex patterns at lower health. The rays of light can instantly incinerate any Pikmin it touches. Its final, and most deadly attack is charging up a massive beam of light in its eyes. It will charge the attack for a short time before suddenly firing the attack right at the group. The attack is extremely devastating, as it has the potential to kill all the players Pikmin at once.
The Blinking Bonecrusher cannot be damaged by any Pikmin at first. However, there will be numerous mirrors set up around the boss. When the boss begins to charge up its beam attack, the player should run behind the mirror. When the Bonecrusher fires the beam, it will deflect back at the boss and knock their skull off their body and to the ground. This allows for the player to attack the skull for a short amount of time, but the Bonecrusher will begin to slurp up Pikmin with its unnervingly long and sharp tongue after a short time. Once destroyed, the Bonecrusher’s body will suddenly burst apart and explode, leaving only the skull to be collected. When defeating a Blinking Bonecrusher for the first time, the player will be rewarded with the “Spawn of Nebula” achievement.
In Overlord mode, the attacks of the Blinking Bonecrusher are upgraded. Their fire-breathing attack has a fifty-percent chance of becoming blue fire, giving it the ability to instantly kill non-flame resistant Pikmin. Its finger beam attack will leave small trails of fire when it digs into the ground. The fist-slamming attack will leave small pools of mud for a short time period. Lastly, the boss gains a new attack, in which it will breathe a large gust of gloom on half of its arena.
Notes
- Data file #1: The Blinking Bonecrusher can be hurt by its own beam, try standing behind a mirror.
- Data file #2: The Blinking Bonecrusher is extremely dangerous. Be ready for anything.
- Data file #3 (Overlord mode): Watch out for the deadly gloom breath of the Blinking Bonecrusher! It engulfs half of the arena!
Olimar's notes
- “What is this thing? This beast is horrifying! I don’t know where it came from, but it doesn’t seem to feed or sleep. It kills for pleasure. This creature is a natural psychopath!! I don’t know how it came to be, so I’m assuming it’s yet another supernatural phenomenon that’s found on this planet. The skeleton this… thing inhabits is worse. It’s some form of fused mutation of a primate and tauras species. It’s unnatural… I hope to never encounter this beast again.”
Louie's notes
- “Do NOT eat.”
President’s notes
- “…no comment…”
Overlord’s thoughts
- “This horrific anomaly was a work of Nebula. I just hope Olimar took out all of the Bonecrushers on this planet, I’d hate to think that one is still out there.”
