The Arachnode is an awrapnid that, resembles a cocoon while dormant on its web but reveals its true form once a Pikmin or leader gets caught in the web; it uncurls its legs and wanders up to its prey, consuming them quickly once it has reached them. It may also wander around the web freely in order to avoid Pikmin that are being thrown at it.

Aranea is the Arachnode that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. She is one of the initial characters that start Awakened and usable from the beginning of the story.

Aranea originally lived in the Snowblown Wastes, where she had strung together a collection of thick webs to catch prey and repel the intense cold. The ornate collection of webs was noticed by Tatoursin and his group, who were traveling through the Snowblown Wastes at the time. One of Tatoursin's traveling companions at the time accidentally became trapped in one of the webs, which alerted Aranea to attack for a potential meal. Tatoursin was easily able to repel the threat and Awakened her in the process, after which Aranea decided to travel together with Tatoursin and his team, in a mutual symbiotic relationship. Eventually, once the Diamond Settlement was founded, Aranea ended up staying and living there, setting up a new home web which she tied between two shoots.

Aranea's primary contribution to the settlement is her production of thread and woven items. Aranea can produce several strands of thread each day, which she can also weave into various forms, including clothing items for the settlement's residents, blankets to use for warmth and as door and window coverings, and woven baskets which can be used to transport multiple small items at once.

Aranea is quiet and hardworking, spending each day cleaning up her web, producing new thread to use for her projects, and weaving new clothing and blankets for the other residents of the Diamond Settlement. She is polite and attentive toward other creatures that strike up a conversation with her, but she doesn't usually initiate a conversation on her own, preferring to focus on her work and paying little attention to the world around her.

Aranea is mentioned to have produced at least one brood of spiderlings at some point in the past. Arachnodes do not typically stay with and raise their young, so Aranea has not interacted much with her brood, as they parted ways as soon as their egg sac hatched. These Arachnode spiderlings probably still live in the Snowblown Wastes, where Aranea was originally native to, and are likely responsible for a substantial portion of the region's high quantity of thread.

Aranea's name is derived from "Araneae", the taxonomic order to which spiders belong. Aranea is very similar, both in her name and her role in the story, to the character "Aracha" from Dry Tundra Survival, the unreleased third entry in the Pikmin Survival Saga, which was the predecessor to Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. Aracha, similar to Aranea, was an Arachnode whose primary skill was the ability to spin string into clothing. However, Aracha was a shop owner who sold the clothing they produced to camp residents, rather than giving clothing items to creatures free of charge as needed.

OLIMAR! Get the Pikmin out of the web! Quickly! – The ship, upon discovering the Arachnode.

Arachnodes are a returning enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They have a large, black orb for a main body, with eight large legs for movement. Yellow stripes and spots cover the Arachnode's body. The Arachnode itself lives in a large spider web which is attached to two sticks that are stuck upright in the ground.

The Arachnode will stay idle within its web. The web is usually in the paths that Winged Pikmin take. Pikmin caught in the web will be stuck until whistled by the captain to try and escape. This will cause the Arachnode to wake up from its slumber and skitter over to the Pikmin to eat them. However, throwing a fire starter will burn the web and cause the spider to fall. On the ground, it will attempt to either run away or eat Pikmin, although it’s at an extreme disadvantage either way, considering they are much weaker when they’re fighting Pikmin on the ground.

There are many ways to take out an Arachnode. Throwing a fire starter is an effective method, as it makes the spider extremely easy to take out. A single Weighted Pikmin that gets stuck will cause the web to fall apart as well. Rubber Pikmin can also avoid the stickiness of the web due to their adhesive resistance. Snapdragon Pikmin can burn down the web with their fiery attack. Iguana Pikmin can hit the spider afar with their tongue without being at risk of getting eaten. Fur Pikmin can easily climb across the web and attack the spider while they’re on it, making them the best Pikmin type to use.

In Overlord mode, the Arachnode can grab items that the Pikmin drop when they get stuck and wrap them around in a web. This web must be broken by Pikmin to access the object again.

Olimar's notes

The Arachnode, unlike most other radical spider subspecies, actually builds webs to hunt and trap their prey. Nothing is safe from the strong adhesive silk, mainly Pikmin and small mandiblards. Arachnodes, like most spiders, will wrap their finished meals in a cocoon for storage, but they’ve been observed wrapping pellets and berries as well. This has led to a theory that the Arachnode could possibly be an omnivore.

Louie's notes

Make sure to pick off the legs of the spider, before cracking open the abdomen and removing the insides. Add nacho cheese or salsa to the inside of your bowl. Crush legs up into small, bite-sized chips and microwave for a few minutes. You can not only eat the leg chips, but you can even eat the bowl when you’re done. It’s entirely edible.

President’s notes

Maybe I’ll just take a break in one of these! I can just rest on this web for a little bit, though… how do I get out? Oh, Poko! The spider is coming!! OLIMAR!! HELP ME!!!

Overlord’s thoughts

This guy has a very quick reaction time. The second a fly lands on its web, it springs into action. Even when it’s sleeping, it’s ready for anything. It’s like the Orange Bulborb of awrapnids!
