Ancient Metalworks is the fourth area in Pikmin: Wide World, with Frigid Tundra coming before it. It is a factory ruin with plenty of grass, dirt, and exposed rock; metal and other industrial materials are also prevalent. Debris forms many obstructions that make navigation difficult, compounded by the shallow pools of acid so frequent in the environment. However, that is not to say that water is absent, as there is much of it flooding a particular interior part of Ancient Metalworks until it is drained, but also some in other places. Similarly, acid permeates much of the area until a majority of it is also drained. There is also another, dry interior part of Ancient Metalworks separate from the flooded one.

Ancient Metalworks is often overcast and dreary, making it comfortably cool even with wind, and the temperature only slightly increases while it is sunny. It also regularly rains in the area, making most dirt wet and muddy for that day and at least a day afterward.

Mechanical enemies are a common sight in this area and its caves. The Plasm Wraith serves as the major boss of this area.

Plot

Even before landing in the area, Ancient Metalworks is shown to be flourishing with life. While recording the area's coordinates, the Dolphin Lander detects a distress signal originating from somewhere under its surface, and she urges Olimar and Shacho to investigate. While exploring with their Pikmin, they see Green Pikmin and their Onion in a place they can not yet safely reach as it is surrounded by acid, so they are forced to pass them up for the time being. However, they do end up delving into one cave on their way to another which is the apparent origin of the distress signal.

Going into the area's second cave, Olimar, Shacho, and their Pikmin stumble upon Marie, the sole survivor of the expedition crew she was part of, helplessly tangled in an otherwise vacant web. After she is saved, Marie introduces herself and joins Olimar and Shacho on their adventure. Upon leaving the cave, Olimar, Shacho, and Marie cooperate to rescue the Rock Onion, which Olimar and Shacho could not access themselves, to discover Rock Pikmin. Now with Rock Pikmin, the trio can drain the acid moat around the Green Pikmin and their Onion. With them by their side, Olimar, Shacho, and Marie delve into yet another cave and discover yet another Pikmin type, Purple Pikmin.

Now with all three of Ancient Metalworks' main Pikmin types, the Hocotatian trio can access Marie's crash site, which Marie is hesitant about doing at first but gets over after an emotional outburst caused by Captain Hunnigan's current state and the general events that caused it. Following this, Marie lets Olimar and Shacho know of a potential new area to explore but needs time to figure out where it is. The next day, Olimar lands the Dolphin Lander at Frigid Tundra after having a dream involving Louie the night before.

After rescuing Louie in Frigid Tundra, Olimar, Shacho, and Marie return to Ancient Metalworks with him. The four work together to access yet another cave to drain most of the remaining acid in the area. After this, they explore where they couldn't before and soon encounter a Robust Bulbot, which they defeat. Come sundown, Olimar is unusually the last one to board the Dolphin Lander, but he never makes it on as he is once again abducted by none other than the all-too-familiar Plasm Goolix. This merits Olimar's unease about what could be inhabiting the area, having already witnessed some of its organic wildlife dissolve into plasm upon death.

Immediately the following day, Shacho, Marie, and Louie return to Ancient Metalworks and rush out of the Dolphin Lander to the Master Onion. They gather their Pikmin forces and follow a trail of plasm leading them directly to the Plasm Wraith's now-accessible lair. After defeating it, the three destroy what little remains of the Plasm Wraith while the Pikmin carry Olimar, overcome with emotion, to the Dolphin Lander to recover. The night the Plasm Wraith is destroyed, Marie has a moment of self-reflection and, having opened her mind, finally can tell the rest of the group of the area she mentioned before: Colossal Hollow.
