Augh! Don’t step on that eye… rock… thing! – The ship, upon discovering the Flatoculus

The Flatoculus is a disguising enemy found in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles a small, grey, flat stone on the ground at a first glance. Once it’s approached however, is when it reveals its true form. It will reveal itself as a large eye with white sclera and a blue pupil. The bottom of the eyeball still has the rock color and texture, however.

The Flatoculus will remain disguised as a stone until Pikmin approach or attack it. Once it blinks to reveal its true form, it will attempt to attack Pikmin by suddenly jumping up in the air. This will fling the Pikmin into the air, above the Flatoculus. The eyebulb will then glow a bright yellow and begin to shake rapidly, before firing a large beam of light above it; incinerating all Pikmin that are caught in the blast. The Flatoculus will return to its original, camouflaged state when there’s no Pikmin engaging it.

Defeating a Flatoculus can be dangerous due to their light attack. Swarming or throwing Pikmin at the eyebulb may work, but is still risky due to their dangerous ray of light. However, Lumin are able to take out the Flatoculus without the risk of perishing due to their immunity to light attacks. Dart Pikmin are also able to kill the eyebulb instantly, as with all eyebulbs. It’s best to wait for the Flatoculus to perform its attack first, before swarming the creature if the player is not using Lumin.

In Overlord mode, the Flatoculus will immediately perform an attack when it reveals its true form.

Olimar's notes

This species of eyebulb gets their main source of food through two things; the soil beneath them and the sun above them. They are like plants in a way, as they intake minerals and convert sunlight through photosynthesis for sustenance. The creature has a lot of energy built up within them due to such an intake, which it can release in a large gamma burst as a defense mechanism. It conceals itself in dirt and stone during its rest cycles as camouflage.

Louie's notes

Remove yucky stones from this eyeball and eat it raw with wasabi sauce. It’s an experience you’ll be eyeing up constantly!

President’s notes

I need eyes monitoring my workers at all times! I can’t let those dolts slack off. So if I get a few of these guys to report back to me… oh wait… they can’t talk…

Overlord’s thoughts

I gotta be careful as to not step on a Flatoculus. I remember stepping on a thing that made a crunchy, squishy sound, and I looked down in horror. Turns out it was just a pellet from a pellet posy. That scared me to death.
