The Apple Mortar is an enemy that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles a large, green, cannon plant with a few leafy vines protruding from it. The cannon rests on a large base of leaves. The Apple Mortar has a few large apples within its opening when it spawns.

The Apple Mortar will rest idly with a large stockpile of apples; three apples in its hold. Once any Pikmin approach it, the Apple Mortar will suddenly spring to life. The mortar will aim itself in the direction of the target, before charging up and firing a massive explosion of three apples. These apples will fly off screen for a few seconds, before slamming onto the ground a few seconds later. The place where an apple lands can be indicated by a shadow slowly growing larger. The different apple colors determine the type of apple. Red apples are normal, and have no abilities. Red-orange apples will create a small pool of fire when they land on the ground. Green apples will create a small pool of acid when they also land. Once the Apple Mortar fires these apples, they will take ten seconds to reload.

Apple Mortars can be difficult to take out due to their stocky health. Attacking the main body of the mortar is the best way of taking it out. Using Red Pikmin and Green Pikmin are recommended due to their respective elemental resistances. Alternatively, Snapdragon Pikmin can breathe fire on the mortar, and deal heavy damage with their fire attack. Rock Pikmin and Weighted Pikmin can also survive the blunt force impact of the apples when they land on them.

In Overlord mode, the Apple Mortar will fire caramel apples, which can trap Pikmin with their sticky adhesive.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The Apple Mortar can fire many different apples utilizing different elements. Bring the right Pikmin for the right apples.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2: The body of an apple Mortar is very vulnerable to fire.

Olimar's notes

This species of fruitshot can produce apples with a certain secretion depending on the type. Wether it be a highly corrosive, acidic secretion, or a waxy, combustible secretion. They can even produce apples with a sappy, sugary secretion. The sap apples are effectively used for hunting prey, as small insects will be caught by the sap, and digested by the mortar plant.

Louie's notes

Pick the apples covered in the brown, gooey stuff. They have a sugary taste. Don’t eat the red-orange apples or green apples… they don’t taste good.

President’s notes

Nothing seems wrong about these apples. I wonder what would happen if I ate this green one right here!

Overlord’s thoughts

Why do I hear screaming? People need to stop eating these fruitshot plants! They’re very dangerous!
