The Thorny Devil is a sauridian that appears in Pikmin 4 (Wii U). It serves as the game's third major boss and is fought in Vast Plains. The Thorny Devil resembles the real-world lizard species of the same name, having a sleek, brown body covered in thorns. It has four eyes and a long tongue.
Any Pikmin species can be used to kill the Thorny Devil but Rock Pikmin are recommended. Its tail is its weakpoint, and so having Pikmin attack it is the key to victory. The basic strategy against the Thorny Devil consists of making it smash into a wall when it rolls to expose its soft belly and then attacking it. An advanced strategy consists of a much faster method of killing the Thorny Devil, which is to attack it while it is shooting spikes. During this time its skin is bare, opening it to attack, although Pikmin are still in danger of being skewered.
Notes
In-game entry
- “The thorny devil is the largest specimen of sauridian. While most sauridians tend to attack their prey by surprise, this creature goes straight to attacking. It does this because of its spiky covering and leathery skin. Unlike other sauridians, the thorny devil has a long tongue, like the whiptongue bulborb. This suggests that the creature is also capable of ranged attacks. It even has the ability to shoot spikes from its covering, and each spike grows back with ease. the creature seems to have been successful because of this defense mechanism.”
