So... anybody else know what that thing is? – The ship, upon discovering the Air Buoy

The Air Buoy is an extremely unusual enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They resemble large, beige eyeballs with a dark yellow sclera and black pupil at the very tip of the body. A sharp, blue fin is found at the end tail of the Air Buoy, which it uses for attacks. Very small, blue holes can be found at the front of the creature's body.

The Air Buoy can be found floating across the area, whether it be above ground or in a cave. They usually float in a set path, but they may occasionally float around in a free roam. When the Air Buoy floats above Pikmin, they will not engage them. However, if the Pikmin engage the Air Buoy, it will shake off the Pikmin, and begin to attack them. The Air Buoy will jab its tail at Pikmin, which can stab and kill them, or simply send them flying away.

Attacking an Air Buoy is fairly simple. Throwing Pikmin at its main body can cause it to weigh down and fall to the ground, allowing for an easy kill. This can be accomplished with a single Purple Pikmin or Weighted Pikmin. Along with this, throwing a Dart Pikmin at the Air Buoy will cause it to pop and perish instantly. Winged Pikmin can also engage the Air Buoy in the air.

In Overlord mode, the Air Buoy will release a large cloud of poisonous gas when it dies.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: Air Buoys are very frail; try weighing them down with Pikmin.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2 (Overlord mode): The methane of an Air Buoy is extremely noxious. Don't tread in it.

Olimar's notes

Quite possibly the most radical-looking eyebulb out there, or any species for that matter. This particular species of eyebulb floats across the skies due to naturally produced lethal methane, which allows for the Air Buoy to harmlessly float across the skies. Their filter-feeding system allows for them to intake any flying insects that seemingly manage to run into it, or are sucked into the Buoy. The methane of the creature gives off a pheromone which attracts said insects. If one were to pop the Air Buoy, they would probably suffocate from this gas.

Louie's notes

Smells bad, tastes good, like a durian. The eye flap tastes good but the tail is less preferable despite being packed with many nutrients. Remove the tail, and vacuum-seal the eye flap with barbecue sauce for about a week. Add extra seasoning when removed for a flavorful and chewy experience.

President’s notes

A natural hot air balloon! I can float right over these stupid beasts with my brand-new Air Buoy! Patent pending!

Overlord’s thoughts

I am still a bit lost on the biology of the animals that I was made to protect, but let me tell you the truth about this eyebulb thing; they're probably extraterrestrial. Basically, they just showed up out of nowhere on a random day. I saw thousands of these things in the morning floating from a converged point seemingly traveling to other parts of the planet when I woke up. So what I'm thinking is that the Air Buoy is a space-dwelling creature. Maybe it moved here from another planet? Maybe everything I just saw was a morning hallucination? Not sure.

The Air Buoy is a bizarre enemy in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. It looks unlike any biological creature known to science and is downright alien, being a creamish-beige sac that floats like a balloon, has blue speckles, and a long tail that ends in a sharp, leaflike point. They're a common sight in the skies of Artisan Aqueduct. When Pikmin come by, they will use their extensive tails to stab them, but Rock Pikmin are immune to this attack. Pikmin that are attacking the creature can weigh it down in large enough numbers, causing it to float further to the ground until it shakes them off. When defeated, the creature's main body pops, leaving behind its coiled tail for salvage.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Arguably one of the most alien organisms on this planet that isn't downright supernatural in nature. It is a presumed filter-feeder, for no mouth has been spotted on this living gasbag's bulbous body. Living close to the sea, its long, spear-headed tail is used to deter potential threats, as it's incredibly easy to pop its weak body.

Louie's notes

The tail tastes best when steamed and served over a bed of fluffy white rice with plum sauce. Make sure you remove the spiky end of it.

Bentley's notes

If I'm going to be honest, even if we don't get sufficient info on the giant dog I saw, knowing full well that this creature is documented in the PNF-404 creature database at least puts me at ease. Who would've thought a weather balloon could be so strategic?

Eloise's notes

Is it somebody's birthday? I can't see any other reason as to why it's essentially a living party balloon. Maybe there's some sort of external force who made these guys for that exact purpose? Oh well, I just hope it doesn't accidentally puncture itself due to that wild and wavy tail of its.
